Statesboro is proud to be the host site for the Special Olympics Georgia State Fall Games for 2008-2010.
In October 2008, over 2000 athletes visited Statesboro to participate in the Games. Competition was held at Mill Creek Regional Park & Forest Heights Country Club. Athletes participated in six sports over the course of the weekend: bocce, softball, cycling, long distance running/walking, softball skills & golf skills. In addition to the competitions, athletes participated in the Opening Ceremonies, which was held on Friday night & included a Parade of Athletes, led by former GSU football player & Los Angeles Rams’ 1987 draftee, Fred Stokes, and a Torch Run, led by various law enforcement officers.
Olympic Town was held on Saturday afternoon at Mill Creek & featured different carnival-type activities, and on Saturday night, the athletes participated in a victory dance to celebrate their achievements.
Hundreds of volunteers from the Statesboro community supported the Games & helped serve meals, set up game sites, provide medical assistance & cheer on the athletes.
Thanks to everyone who made the 2008 Special Olympics Georgia State Fall Games a success!
